The map pack favors businesses close to the searcher. If your trucks cover a whole region from one address, here’s what actually works, and what gets your profile suspended.
“How to rank higher on Google Maps” gets about 390 searches a month in the US (Semrush, October 2026). For foundation and waterproofing contractors, the real question is more specific: how do I show up in the towns 30 minutes from my shop?
Google says local rankings come down to three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher, or from the place they named), and prominence (how well known you are, including reviews and what’s written about you online).
Distance is the one you can’t change. It’s why you rank well near your shop and fade as you get further away. The good news is that the other two are under your control, and the regular results under the map pack weigh distance much less.
If you go to customers rather than having them come to you, set your profile up as a service-area business. You can list up to 20 service areas. List the towns you really serve.
Service areas tell Google where you work. They don’t, on their own, make you rank in the map pack in every one of those towns. Distance still counts.
For towns beyond your map pack reach, the regular results under the map are where you can win. That takes a page about your work in that town, not a list of town names.
A good town page covers what you see in that town (soil, house age, common problems), the services people there need most, and two or three jobs you’ve done nearby. Start with the towns that bring in the best jobs, not the biggest ones.
An “average ranking” hides everything that matters. Check your position for your two or three main searches in each town you care about, every month. That’s how you see which towns are moving and where the next town page should go.
